Details

Tired of “death by PowerPoint”? This session introduces a practical and engaging alternative using continuous formative assessment—a strategy often seen in education but underutilized in the professional world. Attendees will experience firsthand how tools like Google Sheets and Google Sites can transform presentations into dynamic, interactive experiences that increase engagement, retention, and feedback in real time. This session is designed for staff who deliver information-heavy presentations and want to increase connection and effectiveness with their audiences. Through a hands-on format, participants will not only learn about the method but actively take part in it. This approach models how continuous formative assessment—used in many of our children's classrooms—can also enhance communication, collaboration, and decision-making in professional and organizational settings. To get the most out of this session, bring a device (phone or laptop) with access to Google Sheets because this session does not have a slide deck and benefits from your participation. No prior expertise in educational theory is required. The presenter brings a master’s in educational technology and experience in a graduate program delivered entirely through this presentation format—not as a theorist, but as a practitioner who has lived and learned through this method. This session contains some generated content.

Biography

Calvin Yun is an IT Manager with Associated Students, CSUN, Inc., where he has supported campus operations through technology since 2013. He oversees a small but mighty IT department that handles everything from system administration to user support. While his day-to-day work focuses on practical tech management, Calvin’s Master of Arts in Educational Technology has also led him to take on training and workshop facilitation. Calvin has a strong interest in making emerging tools approachable for non-technical users. His presentations focus on low-barrier, high-impact uses of tools like ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly, and other AI apps, especially for brainstorming, productivity, and writing support. Calvin’s approach is casual, hands-on, and grounded in real-world tasks. He’s not a formal educator, but he’s been in the position of having to explain tech clearly to busy people who don’t have time for jargon. This session reflects that spirit—an introduction to continuous formative assessment from someone who learned by doing, and wants to help others do the same.
