Cal Poly’s Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), powered by AWS, is helping transform Cal Poly’s Strategic Business Services office by using Generative AI (GenAI) to improve procurement processes at Cal Poly. With a primary focus on streamlining procurement scope development for contracts and RFPs, the students and staff at the DxHub are helping campus procurement officers understand how GenAI can transform and aid procurement efforts at Cal Poly. In this session, you will hear the Executive Director of the university’s Strategic Business Services outline the challenges this project addresses and from the DxHub on how AWS innovation and Cal Poly Learn-By-Doing are helping to find AI solutions that can impact public sector procurement across higher education.

Biography
Dustin DeBrum is the Director for the California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI), Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), and 5G Innovation Lab at Cal Poly, where he supports Cal Poly’s cyber education initiatives and digital innovation programs. DeBrum’s higher-education career spans over 23 years at Cal Poly, supporting university and auxiliary commercial operations and enterprise technology services. Before Cal Poly, DeBrum worked for multiple dot-com companies in Silicon Valley. In addition to his experience, DeBrum has presented and hosted workshops, conferences, and online webinars on space cybersecurity, AI, technology disability policy, credit card security, and cloud services deployment. DeBrum holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from San Jose State University and a Master’s in Educational Leadership and Administration from Cal Poly.

Biography
Gus Flusser is a 3rd year computer engineering student at Cal Poly SLO. He has over 4 years of experience in software engineering and has worked at the Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub) for 6 months. Before working at the DxHub, he developed multiple web and mobile applications, including ones used by hundreds of students across California. Gus enjoys leveraging his experience in software engineering and computer science to develop solutions that have a positive direct impact on end users.

Biography
Darren Kraker is a Senior Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services with 30 years of software development experience. Holding degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics from Humboldt State University, Darren specializes in machine learning and generative AI projects at AWS. He leverages his diverse background from roles at Boeing, Starbucks, and Cal Poly to help clients solve complex challenges in innovative ways.

Biography
Darin is chief procurement officer for Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, where he brings over 25 years of procurement experience. He is past president of NIGP: The Institute for Public Procurement, and a recipient of their lifetime achievement award. Darin is the author of several books and articles on procurement and speaks throughout the world on leading procurement practices. He is also a columnist for the NAEP Educational Procurement Journal, focusing on sustainable procurement. In 2020 and 2021, he served as host of the podcast, The Evolution of Procurement. Darin has served as a faculty member for many leading institutions, including Portland Community College, Florida Atlantic University, and Cal Berkeley. Darin holds a bachelor’s degree in Business & Political Science, and master’s degrees in Acquisition Management and Educational Technology, but his academic journey began many years ago as a struggling student at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA.
